A well-prepared DXF file gets you a faster quote, fewer revisions, and parts that come back exactly as intended. A poorly prepared file causes delays and sometimes scrap.
This is what we look for when a file comes in — and the most common issues we see.
Use a single closed outline per part
Each part should be a single closed polyline or a set of closed loops with no gaps, overlaps, or duplicate lines.
If you’re exporting from CAD software, check that arcs and splines have been converted to polylines where required, and that all contours are closed.
One layer per line type
Use separate layers for cut lines, etch lines, and any reference geometry that shouldn’t be cut.
- CUT — outer profile and internal cutouts to be cut through
- ETCH — engraved lines or text to be marked, not cut
- REFERENCE — border lines, fold lines, annotations (should not be sent to us)
Remove title blocks and construction lines
Title blocks, dimension lines, hatching, and construction geometry add noise to the file. Strip them before sending.
Don’t include kerf allowance in the geometry
Kerf allowance is applied at our end based on material, thickness, and the feature being cut. If you’ve already offset your geometry to account for kerf, tell us.
Check minimum feature sizes
As a general guide:
- Minimum internal hole diameter: equal to or greater than the material thickness
- Minimum slot width: 1.2x material thickness
- Minimum bridge width between features: 1.5mm in thin sheet, proportionally more in thicker material
Indicate material and thickness
