Architectural metalwork
Architectural metalwork in Queenstown
FOCAL designs, makes and installs custom architectural metalwork from our workshop at 19 Margaret Place, Frankton. We build staircases, balustrades and handrails, brass feature work, fireplaces, cladding and laser-cut components for high-end homes and commercial fit-outs across Queenstown, Wānaka and Central Otago, working with architects, interior designers, builders and joiners from first drawing to final install.

What we make
Staircases
Steel staircases with stringers laser-cut from plate, flat-bar or folded balustrades, and timber treads integrated with your joiner. Modelled in 3D and delivered in sections ready to bolt and weld on site.
Balustrades & handrails
Pre-fitted on site before powder coating, then re-fitted and finished so every joint is seamless. Including LED handrails with a machined rebate for the strip and diffuser and wiring hidden through a hollow bracket.
Brass feature work
Brass kitchen islands with welded-in sinks, handmade brass basins, mirrors, folded brass cladding, door handles, beam covers and shelving rods, with polished, brushed, antique or patina finishes.
Fireplaces & woodstores
Bespoke fireplaces and hot- or cold-rolled steel woodstores, designed with interior designers and architects and set into the surrounding joinery.
Cladding, screens & laser-cut panels
Folded cladding, decorative screens and laser-cut panels in mild steel, stainless, aluminium, brass, copper and corten, cut on our own 6kW fibre laser.
Commercial fit-outs
Shop fit-out metalwork, working alongside the builder and joiner, such as the Patagonia store fit-out in Queenstown.

Designed, cut, built and installed in one workshop
1.Design
We model every piece in Autodesk Inventor or Fusion 360, resolve the connections and issue shop drawings for the architect to sign off.
2.Cut & fold
Parts are cut on our 6kW fibre laser (sheets up to 4000 x 2000mm) and formed on a 175-tonne CNC press brake, up to 3050mm long.
3.Fabricate & finish
MIG, TIG, ARC and gas welding on all materials, then polishing, patina or powder coat.
4.Install
The team that built it installs it, pre-fitting on site where the finish demands it.
See our laser cutting, folding and fabrication pages for capacities.
Lead times
A complex metalwork package typically takes eight to fourteen weeks from drawing issue to delivery: two to four weeks for design and shop drawings, up to four weeks for specialist materials, and four to six weeks of workshop time for a staircase with handrail, balustrade and cladding. Bring us in early and the metalwork won't hold up your programme.

Send drawings or an idea to george@focalqt.com or call 03 746 7055. We aim to have quotes back within a week, longer where design work comes first. Once a quote is accepted, a 30% deposit puts the job into our production schedule. Everything is made in Queenstown, and we freight throughout New Zealand.
